With all 44 feet of Cheeky Monkey to ourselves, we decide it’s time to leave the Marquesas and sail onward to explore the Tuamotu Atolls in French Polynesia. For those of you who haven’t ever heard of an atoll, it is a ring-shaped reef, island, or chain of islands formed of coral. And the Tuamotus are one of the most famous locations in the world for these strange island formations.
Getting to the Tuamotus from the Marquesas requires some attention to the prevailing weather, and especially the tides, as the narrow pass into Fakarava creates a bottleneck that can cause some pretty gnarly sea rage if we don’t time your entrance well.
Once we work out the best time to enter the Fakarava pass, which is 500 miles away, we set off with just the two of us on board. But unfortunately our Raymarine autopilot isn’t up to the task, so we have to work around it by relying once again on our backup. *sigh*
As we move through these stunning French Polynesian islands, we are slowing down a little and taking time to enjoy view.
We hope you appreciate this video as we show you a little slice of the cruising life in the South Pacific.
Oh, and we recommend this book for all things related to fishing while cruising — check it out, if you’re not already familiar with it!

You guys ok? We miss your videos. I know you’re on the far side of the world. Hopefully just too busy to download or too far from internet.
I like the part where Tasha caught the fish – although, it was kind of yucky. …
I also liked the part where the cat tried to get it. – Cypress
